How to choose an external colour scheme in 30 seconds.

How to choose an external colour scheme in 30 seconds.

When we had our house resheeted, I needed to choose a colour for the trim.  The house itself is a classic miners cottage.  We ended up going for a galvanized (silver colour) roof as this is the traditional colour for these roofs, but the trim had to be chosen from the colorbond range.   We forgot to tell the roof guy what colour we wanted (I hadn’t had time to work it out) and then … Read entire article »

Wreath finished and some new music I found…

I finally finished my Solstice wreath.  Luckily we will be having some folks over for “Christmas in July” so at least I won’t have to wait a whole year to use it! Listening to “Old Adam the Poacher” while crafting.  Beautiful quiet times to be had during winter. Time to “be still”. Foam ring and some of the 311 *(%^&*^%$ felt circles I cut up to make the ruffles. Patience is not such a great virtue of … Read entire article »

First night in the new house…

First night in the new house…

and we froze.. even despite the best efforts of our guardian angel – in the form of our local electrician, who came to our rescue at very short notice late in the evening after we managed to do something nasty to the fusebox when we plugged in our new heater. Part way through the night Lucas woke up and came bawling up to our room.  Uncharacteristically.. I let him sleep in with us.  It must be … Read entire article »

Dragging out the Christmas Decorations…

Dragging out the Christmas Decorations…

Winter solstice and Yuletide are on their way.. and I’m looking forward to putting up some decorations to celebrate.  Except.. I think most of my decorations are too “Christmassy”.  We have a lovely but bare wire archway over our front gate.  Eventually I want to have a wisteria growing up over it, but in the meantime, man made would have to do.  Anyways… I checked ebay and found some wonderful snowflake lights that would look … Read entire article »

Photography Letter Art

Photography Letter Art

Last year I went to Handmade Canberra Upmarket and saw Letter Art Photos for the first time.  I fell in love with the idea, but unfortunately not the prices! Then and there I vowed to make one for each of my sons… and promptly forgot about the whole thing as soon as I got home. Since we’ve bought this old house, the idea filtered back into my brain and so I’ve been investigating ways of making … Read entire article »

10 ways to re-purpose an old door.

10 ways to re-purpose an old door.

So, according to our building report, the front door is kaput.  So.. I’ve been cruising the internet to come up with ideas to reuse it.  It would be such a shame to just throw it out! Here are 10 ways I’m tempted to reuse it: (1) A bed headboard We are going to only have one old door, so these headboards only require one.  if you are looking for ideas for more than one, check out Bradford Avenue’s … Read entire article »

Letter and mail holders

Letter and mail holders

One of the things I’m trying to do with this house is make it more organised than the place we are currently living in. Other than the obvious benefits, a more organised home lends itself better visually, and this will increase the perceived value of the property, and being a PPOR (principal place of residence) as opposed to an IP (investment property) I can actually install stuff that needs holes drilled into walls etc. Back … Read entire article »

Builtin wardrobes?

Builtin wardrobes?

Builtins are tricky in old houses.. most miners cottages didn’t have them as original features, but these days, they are a standard in a modern house. So.. if you are going for an old-world look with modern functionality, you can get stuck on built-in wardrobes. There are some that fit in with the character of an older home, but they don’t have sliding doors and they don’t come cheap. They are usually installed by a … Read entire article »
